The BMW E9X M3 is the only M3 with a V8, built from 2007 to 2013 as the E90 Saloon, E92 Coupe and E93 Convertible. Its naturally aspirated S65 4.0-litre V8 produces 420 PS at 8,300 rpm and 400 Nm, revs to 8,400 rpm and drives the rear wheels through a six-speed manual or seven-speed M DCT. Its balance, sound and response make it one of the most popular modern classics to develop for road and track.
The S65 rewards careful maintenance. Owners commonly replace the rod bearings as preventive work and watch the throttle actuators, and good oil and cooling are vital for track use, from MOTUL oil to CSF radiators and oil coolers. Eventuri carbon intakes add induction sound, and a performance exhaust brings out the V8's high-rev character.
The chassis is where the E9X M3 shines. Coilovers and suspension from KW, MOTON and Suspension Secrets, plus ST Trackparts and HARDRACE bushes, arms and strut braces, sharpen response on older cars that have lost their factory precision. For circuit driving, brake upgrades from EBC and Pagid, braided lines, brake cooling ducts and high-temperature fluid improve fade resistance on a car that is often driven hard.
