The MMX BMW S65 Billet VANOS Cover Set is a permanent fix for one of the S65's better-known weaknesses. The factory VANOS covers are plastic, and when they crack or detach the debris finds its way into a running engine, with consequences that range from expensive to terminal. MMX replaces them with CNC-machined aluminium.
A Known S65 Failure
The plastic VANOS covers on the S65 sit in a hot, high-vibration environment and become brittle with age. Cracking is common, and detachment is not rare. Because of where they sit, a failed cover does not simply fall away harmlessly: fragments can enter the valvetrain, which is how a manageable maintenance item becomes serious engine damage.
Machined Aluminium, Direct Fit
The MMX replacements are CNC-machined from 6061-T6 aluminium and finished in anodised black. They retain full spring coverage exactly as the original covers do, install directly with no modification, and are engineered in the UK. Once fitted, the failure mode is removed permanently rather than deferred to the next set of plastic covers.
A Fraction Of The Alternative
The conventional answer to a failed cover is replacement of the whole VANOS unit, which is a very different bill. Fitting billet covers preventatively costs a small fraction of that and gives proper long-term peace of mind on an appreciating car.

Should these be fitted before a failure or after?
Before. The value of the part is preventative – once a plastic cover has broken up, the damage it can cause has usually already been done.
Is the engine disturbed to fit them?
They are a direct-fit replacement for the existing covers and require no modification, though the work should be carried out by someone familiar with the S65 valvetrain.
