The MMX Billet Air Conditioning Cap Set replaces the brittle plastic service port caps found across the BMW and MINI range with machined 6061-T6 aluminium items. They are anodised black, hand-polished, and carry the subtle MMX ‘X’ logo. Pre-sealed and supplied as a set, they fit in seconds and can be returned to stock just as quickly.
Choosing The Right Gas Type
BMW and MINI use two refrigerant systems with different port caps, and the correct set is identified by the colour of the factory caps. Black caps indicate an R134A system, OE part numbers 64 53 8 397 437 and 64 53 8 387 438. Grey caps indicate the newer R1234YF gas, OE part numbers 07 14 9 287 978 and 07 14 9 287 979. Selecting by the colour already on the car is the simplest method.
Small Part, Common Failure
The factory caps are thin plastic in a hot, vibrating environment, and they crack, seize or go missing over time. That matters, because the cap is the secondary seal on the service port. Machined aluminium replacements with proper seals remove a nuisance failure and tidy an area of the engine bay that is always on show when the bonnet is up.

Which gas type does the vehicle use?
The colour of the existing caps is the quickest guide: black indicates R134A, grey indicates R1234YF. The refrigerant type is also usually printed on the under-bonnet service label.
Do the caps affect the air conditioning system?
They are the secondary seal on the service ports and do not change how the system operates. Fitting them requires no discharge or re-gas.
