Developed for a relatively narrow group of BMW's newest petrol engines, LL-22 FE++ is principally associated with selected B48B TU2 four-cylinder and B58 TU2 six-cylinder applications. Its exceptionally low 0W-12 viscosity is designed to reduce internal friction and pumping losses, helping improve fuel efficiency and reduce CO₂ emissions in engines specifically engineered to operate with this ultra-low-viscosity lubricant.
This is not a universal replacement for older BMW 0W-20, 0W-30 or 5W-30 oils. BMW LL-22 FE++ is not backwards compatible with earlier BMW petrol engines, making correct engine identification essential before use.

What Is BMW Longlife-22 FE++?
BMW Longlife-22 FE++ is one of BMW's newest fuel-efficiency-focused engine oil specifications.
Unlike more familiar BMW approvals such as LL-01, LL-04 or LL-17 FE+, LL-22 FE++ is designed specifically for a narrow selection of newer petrol engines from approximately model year 2022 onwards.
Its defining feature is the extremely low 0W-12 viscosity.
Reducing lubricant viscosity lowers resistance within the engine, helping decrease friction between internal components and reducing the energy required to circulate the oil. In engines specifically engineered around this lubricant, that contributes to improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions.
However, this also means LL-22 FE++ should only be used in engines specifically approved for it. It is not simply a newer oil that supersedes previous BMW Longlife specifications.
Why 0W-12?
A 0W-12 engine oil is dramatically thinner at operating temperature than traditional BMW oils such as 5W-30 or 0W-30.
The 0W rating supports rapid oil circulation during cold starts, while the unusually low SAE 12 operating-temperature viscosity is engineered to minimise internal resistance once the engine reaches temperature.
This can help:
- Reduce internal friction
- Reduce pumping losses
- Improve fuel efficiency
- Support lower vehicle CO₂ emissions
- Provide rapid lubrication during cold starts
These benefits only apply when the engine itself has been designed and approved around this viscosity.

The most important compatibility distinction for BMW LL-22 FE++ is engine generation.

These represent the newest major evolutions of BMW's modular B-Series petrol engine family and incorporate substantial internal changes compared with earlier B48 and B58 generations.
LL-22 FE++ should therefore be selected by exact engine generation or VIN, rather than simply by model badge.

Many of the BMW engines using LL-22 FE++ also incorporate 48V mild-hybrid technology, but that should not be used as the sole compatibility criterion.
Not every 48V BMW requires LL-22 FE++.
For example, BMW's S68 V8 is used in several modern electrified or 48V-assisted vehicles but does not automatically use LL-22 FE++.
This means the oil should not be marketed as suitable for “all BMW 48V mild hybrids”.
The correct criterion is whether the specific engine is approved for BMW Longlife-22 FE++.
Not Suitable for S58 BMW M Engines
BMW LL-22 FE++ should not be used in the S58-powered BMW M range simply because those cars are modern or use newer engine technology.
Do not use this oil as a blanket recommendation for:

These vehicles use BMW's S68 4.4-litre V8, which has its own oil requirements.
The fact that a vehicle uses electrification or 48V technology does not make it compatible with LL-22 FE++.
Not Backwards Compatible With Earlier B58 Engines
This is the most important warning for anyone considering LL-22 FE++ for an older BMW.
BMW LL-22 FE++ is not backwards compatible.
Do not use it as an automatic replacement for the oils specified in earlier B58-powered models such as:
