What Is BMW Longlife-04 Engine Oil?
BMW Longlife-04 is one of BMW's manufacturer-specific engine oil specifications.
Introduced as emissions-control technology became increasingly important, LL-04 combines the lubrication requirements of modern BMW engines with a low-SAPS formulation designed to work with exhaust after-treatment systems.
SAPS refers to:
- Sulphated Ash
- Phosphorus
- Sulphur
Reducing these components is particularly important in diesel vehicles equipped with a DPF, as inappropriate engine oil can contribute to non-combustible ash accumulation within the particulate filter over time.

Important Compatibility Information
BMW has used numerous oil specifications across different engines, markets and production periods. Always confirm that your vehicle requires or permits BMW Longlife-04 before ordering.
In particular, this oil should not be assumed suitable for BMW M engines that specifically require a 10W-60 lubricant, including:
- S54: E46 M3 and E85/E86 Z4 M
- S65: E90/E92/E93 M3
- S85: E60/E61 M5 and E63/E64 M6
Later-generation BMW engines may also specify newer approvals such as BMW Longlife-17 FE+, Longlife-19 FE or other application-specific standards.
Newer B47 TU2 diesel engines should not automatically be grouped together with earlier B47 applications requiring LL-04.
Likewise, later engines such as the S68 V8 found in vehicles including the G90/G99 M5 and G09 XM should be checked against BMW's current vehicle-specific oil requirements.
