The BMW G80 M3's exhaust note is renowned for being rather quiet and lacklustre. With the addition of OPF & secondary catalytic convertors, the G80's S58 engine becomes muted and undramatic - a huge problem for us BMW enthusiasts. A huge number of aftermarket exhaust manufacturers such as Milltek & Remus have brought out their solutions to this problem with their own awesome stainless steel exhaust systems for the G8X platform. Whilst these stainless steel systems are great-sounding and high quality, what if you're looking for a great value, lightweight, titanium option that's super easy to install and has been extensively engineered to produce the best possible exhaust note?
R44 Performance has developed a full titanium cat-back exhaust system for the G80 M3 & G82/G83 M4. The system offers a huge 17kg weight saving over the factory system, whilst sitting at a third of the price of other full titanium systems on the market.
Why is an upgraded exhaust system important?
Upgrading your M3/M4's exhaust system has a number of benefits including increased power and torque, faster throttle response, quicker turbo spool, weight saving and improved noise. All these factors contribute to faster acceleration, better cornering, shorter stopping distance and an overall improved driving experience.
How good does the R44 G80 M3 exhaust system sound?
Although completely subjective, the R44 G80/G82 Titanium Cat-Back exhaust system has become renowned on social media and forums for its incredible volume and tone. It's certainly a huge improvement over the standard BMW exhaust that is extremely raspy and muted. Here are some videos to help you make your mind up:
What are the key features?
Most notably is the full titanium construction. Titanium is an extremely lightweight material whilst being one of the strongest and most durable metals on the planet. This offers a huge benefit to the G8X platform in the form of an astonishing 17kg weight saving - almost half the weight of the factory system. This is great for acceleration, braking and cornering, combined with better flow for increased engine performance.
The R44 system removes the secondary catalytic convertors which are hugely restrictive, thereby reducing back pressure from the exhaust gases. For EU vehicles, the system eliminates the factory OPFs. Crucially, the system is supplied with a piece of technology that communicates with the vehicle's ECU, ensuring that no error codes or engine software issues occur. This is not necessary for the US market, hence why the system is available in two different variants depending on which vehicle you have.
Another stand-out feature of the R44 Full Titanium G80 Cat Back System is the H-pipe that reduces drone at higher speeds, making the system great to live with on a daily basis. Right next to the H-pipe are two small resonators, replacing the large single resonator of the OEM exhaust system.
As you can see by this fitted photo, the backbox has been completely redesigned to be completely bypassed when the exhaust valves are open. This makes the system, effectively, almost straight-through when in the sportier driving modes for better performance and a much louder exhaust note. When the valves are closed, the system becomes more civilised for those times you want to fly under the radar. The system is supplied with four carbon fibre exhaust tips for an aggressive OEM+ look.
For an in-depth walkthrough of the R44 Titanium Cat Back Exhaust System, see our detailed YouTube video below.
How much does the system cost?
For US market vehicles, the price is £3,399.99 or $4,161.99 (incl VAT). EU/UK systems are priced at £3,999.99 (incl VAT). The price difference between the two comes from the OPF delete technology needed for vehicles manufactured for the non-US market. For only an extra 4-5% on top of the vehicle's base price, the R44 system completely transforms the driving experience.
