If you've been following the BMW drag racing scene, no doubt you've come across Tom Wrigley Performance. We've been working with Tom for quite a few years now. He was a key proponent of of G87 M2 xDrive drag build & got behind the wheel last year at Texas 2K25 delivering some great times.

Read all about that here.

A New Benchmark for the BMW S58 Platform

Tom Wrigley’s G80 M3 xDrive has officially become the fastest BMW in the world, recording a 7.674-second quarter mile at 183.94mph, surpassing the previous record of 7.77 seconds at 183mph, and winning the X58 class.

This isn’t just a marginal improvement. At this level, shaving even hundredths of a second requires major advancements in setup, power delivery and consistency. This run firmly cements the S58 & B58 platforms as one of the most capable performance engines BMW has ever produced.

From the outside, the car still resembles a G80 M3. Underneath, it is a fully developed drag platform engineered for one purpose: going faster than anything else wearing a BMW badge.

A fully built S58 engine featuring a 5150 AutoSport stroker kit, GSC valvetrain upgrades and a Headgames Motorworks cylinder head forms the foundation. Boost comes from a Precision Next Gen Sportsman turbo via a custom Overkill Performance single turbo setup, a combination Tom has been constantly refining.

The result is a car producing around 1650whp, capable of accelerating to extreme speeds in a timeframe that, not long ago, was reserved for jet-powered dragsters.

Day 1 – Driveshaft Failure

The event started with a driveshaft failure. At this level, that’s part of the game — but the key was how quickly the team got the car back up and running.

Day 4 – Transfer Case Swap

By Day 4, the team were faced with replacing the transfer case. What would normally be a major job was completed in record time, keeping them firmly in the fight.

Day 5 – Finals Pressure

After qualifying in the morning, the car broke an input shaft before the final. With minimal time, the team repaired it and lined up against the GSC A90 Supra.

The Role of Supporting Components

At this level, power alone is not enough. The difference between a fast car and a record-breaking car is how effectively that power is managed and deployed onto the strip.

The mapping, cooling, fuelling, suspension and drivetrain stability all become the drivers behind shaving tenths off your times.

Tom’s setup highlights several key areas where proven components and brands play a decisive role:

CSF Cooling

High horsepower S58 builds generate immense heat, especially under repeated drag runs.

The use of CSF cooling components, including upgraded coolers and a custom front-mounted charge cooling system, ensures consistent intake temperatures and drivetrain reliability. Without this level of thermal control, maintaining performance across runs simply wouldn’t be possible.

Tom was also running CSF's new air-to-air intake manifold. Learn more about this new release here.

For every day BMW enthusiasts, CSF cooling upgrades offer both reduced heat soak & long-term reliability. When tuning your car, they become even more beneficial.

AST MOTON 3-Way Suspension

Putting 1600+ horsepower down effectively is one of the biggest challenges in drag racing.

The AST MOTON 3-way suspension setup, combined with Suspension Secrets geometry components, plays a huge role in eliminating squat and maximising traction off the line. It also assists with keeping the wheels straight under extreme load with solid bushes not flexing like rubber or polyurethane items.

Even if you're not pushing as much power as Tom, these modifications can offer noticeable handling and stability improvements whether you tailor it for drag racing, track or fast-road.

Funk Motorsport Heat Management

Components like the Funk Motorsport turbo blanket may seem small in comparison to major hardware, but they are essential in managing engine bay temperatures and protecting surrounding components..

In high-performance builds, controlling heat is just as important as generating power.

For everyday enthusiasts, this means:

  • Better component longevity
  • Reduced heat-related performance loss
  • A more stable overall setup

Not Just for 1600whp Builds

While Tom Wrigley’s G80 M3 operates at an extreme level, the significance of this achievement goes far beyond record-breaking numbers.

Most BMW owners are not building full drag cars. However, the same brands and components used in this build are designed with the same principles:

  • Reliability under stress
  • Consistent performance
  • Proven results in demanding conditions

Whether it’s a lightly modified street car, a fast road setup or a weekend drag build, these parts deliver tangible improvements without going to the lengths of a full engine or gearbox build.

Tom's record is a clear demonstration of how far the BMW S58 platform can be pushed when the right components, knowledge and development come together.

It also highlights how incredible BMWs have become:

  • The S58 is now a proven high-power platform
  • xDrive systems are redefining traction limits
  • Aftermarket brands are playing a bigger role than ever in performance development

For you guys, it means more accessible performance than ever before.

Congratulations to Tom Wrigley Performance

Breaking a world record at this level requires more than just parts. It takes relentless testing, constant iteration and a deep understanding of the platform.

How long do you guys think it will be before we see BMWs dip into the 6's?

We’re proud to support and supply many of the brands involved in this build here at R44 Performance, helping bring race-proven components to BMW owners around the world.
