Ask ten BMW owners what the best first modification is and you will get ten answers. Ask ten BMW owners who have already done everything, and most of them say the same thing: suspension. Power is easy to add and easy to get used to. A car that changes direction properly, sits flat under braking and puts the power down out of a corner feels different every single time you drive it.

BC Racing has spent more than a decade perfecting what is arguably the most affordable, performance and comfort oriented, and most customisable coilover suspension system on the market. The catch — if you can call it that — is choice. There are eight distinct series, and the differences are not obvious from a product title alone. What is a coilover, and why does it transform a BMW?

A coilover is a combined spring and damper unit that replaces the separate spring and shock absorber fitted to your BMW from the factory. The spring sits on a threaded body, so ride height, damping force and — if you specify it — spring rate all become things you control rather than things you accept.

Factory BMW suspension is a compromise, and a well-judged one. It has to work for a motorway commute, a supermarket car park and a B-road, on every tyre BMW ever signed off. A coilover removes that compromise.

With a BC Racing kit you control three things independently: ride height, damping and, optionally, spring rate. Crucially, ride height adjusts separately from spring preload — so you can drop the car without winding preload into the spring and destroying the ride quality you paid for. That single design decision is why a properly set up coilover can ride better than a cheap lowering spring while being far more capable.

V1 Series — comfort first

The BC Racing V1 Series is the most road-biased coilover in the range: a 30-way damping adjustable monotube kit built around a 44mm piston in a 50mm damper body, aimed at daily-driven cars where ride comfort is the priority.

The high oil capacity for its size resists damper fade, and the bearing-mounted upper spring platform keeps the spring working cleanly through steering movement. The V1 suits the owner who wants a meaningful step up in body control and the ability to set their own ride height, without the car ever becoming tiring on a long drive.

BR Series — the one most BMW owners should buy

The BC Racing BR Series is the brand's best-selling coilover and the default recommendation for most BMWs: a 30-way damping adjustable monotube kit with a 46mm piston in a 53mm damper body, offering the most affordable entry into coilover suspension without sacrificing performance, comfort, build quality or handling.

The larger 53mm body is the important part. More oil volume means lower peak temperatures, which means the damping you set is still the damping you have after twenty minutes of hard driving. Four top mount configurations cover everything from rubber-centred aluminium mounts to camber-adjustable pillowball front and rear.

DS Series — track biased, road usable

The BC Racing DS Series is a track-biased 30-way adjustable coilover using a digressive piston and damping curve, designed to control body movement without the car skating over kerbs and broken surfaces.

Digressive valving means high damping force at low shaft speeds — which is what controls roll, dive and squat — and reduced damping force at high shaft speeds, which is what lets the wheel deal with kerbs and mid-corner bumps without unsettling the car. It is the classic track-day compromise done properly, and it is still perfectly liveable on the road.

RM Series — inverted dampers, less unsprung weight

The BC Racing RM Series is a 30-way adjustable coilover built around an inverted monotube damper with a 42mm rod, designed to reduce unsprung weight and move damper oil away from brake heat.

Inverting the damper does two useful things: it moves the oil and gas away from the hub and brake heat, and it moves mass off the wheel. Less unsprung weight means the suspension reacts faster to the road surface, which shows up as better grip, better ride quality and sharper steering feel. The 42mm rod is the other headline — a thicker rod flexes less under cornering load, so your steering geometry stays where you set it.

ER Series — external reservoirs, two-way adjustment

The BC Racing ER Series is a two-way adjustable coilover with external reservoirs, giving 30 clicks of compression adjustment at the reservoir and 30 clicks of rebound at the top of the damper.

Splitting compression and rebound lets you tune how the car behaves under braking independently of how it behaves on the way out of a corner. The reservoirs are not just for adjustment either — the extra oil volume means the damping you dialled in on lap two is still there on lap twelve.

HM Series — inverted plus external reservoirs

The BC Racing HM Series combines the inverted monotube damper of the RM with the two-way external reservoir adjustment of the ER, using a dual piston design and Teflon-coated braided lines for the most demanding track use.

Damper fade is the enemy on a heavily used track car, and the inverted design keeps the fluid away from the heat that causes it while cutting unsprung mass at the same time.

ZR Series — three-way adjustment at club racing money

The BC Racing ZR Series is a three-way adjustable motorsport coilover offering 30 clicks of rebound, 20 clicks of low-speed compression and 12 clicks of high-speed compression, built to bring three-way damping to club racers at an accessible price.

Separating low and high speed compression means you can decide how the car takes a kerb independently of how it takes a weight transfer. Reservoirs can be mounted in the engine bay or boot, and solid stem versions are available for double wishbone chassis.

ZX Series — the full motorsport damper

The BC Racing ZX Series is the brand's full motorsport coilover: three-way adjustable, dual piston, fully rebuildable and filled with ultra-high viscosity index full synthetic shock fluid for racing and competition drifting.

The upright design allows the upper mount to be replaced or changed to suit the car, and the whole damper can be rebuilt — which is exactly what you want on something covering serious competition mileage.

Head to head: how the series compare

BR vs DS Series

Both are 30-way single-adjuster monotube coilovers at similar money. The difference is the damping curve: the BR uses a conventional curve and a larger 53mm body, while the DS uses a digressive piston that puts more damping force into low-speed movements like roll and dive and less into high-speed movements like kerb strikes. Choose the BR for road-first duty, the DS if the car sees regular track days.

DS vs RM Series

Both are digressive 30-way kits aimed at track use. The RM adds an inverted damper body with a 42mm rod, which lowers unsprung weight, keeps the oil away from brake heat and resists rod flex under cornering load. The DS is the more affordable route to digressive valving; the RM is the better damper if the budget allows.

ER vs HM Series

Both are two-way adjustable with external reservoirs, giving 30 clicks of compression and 30 clicks of rebound independently. The HM adds the inverted monotube body and dual piston construction, making it the more heat-resistant and lighter of the two. The ER is the entry point into separate compression and rebound control; the HM is the version for a car that works its dampers hardest.

ZR vs ZX Series

Both are three-way adjustable with the same 30 rebound / 20 low-speed compression / 12 high-speed compression range. The ZR uses an inverted body on strut applications and remote reservoirs, and is positioned as the accessible route into three-way damping for club racers. The ZX is the full motorsport damper — upright, fully rebuildable, with replaceable upper mounts and synthetic race fluid — built for repeated race distance and competition drifting.

One-way vs two-way vs three-way damping — what actually changes?

A one-way kit (V1, BR, DS, RM) adjusts compression and rebound together with a single adjuster across 30 clicks. A two-way kit (ER, HM) separates them, so you can change how the car settles under braking without changing how it behaves under power. A three-way kit (ZR, ZX) splits compression again into low-speed and high-speed, letting you control body movement and bump absorption independently. More adjustment is only an advantage if you know what you are changing and why — most road-driven BMWs are better served by a well set up one-way kit.

Coilover terms explained

Monotube damper
A damper built as a single high-pressure tube, allowing a larger piston and more oil than a twin-tube design. More oil means better heat control and more consistent damping.
Digressive valving
A damping curve that produces high force at low shaft speeds and proportionally less at high shaft speeds. It controls body roll and dive while still allowing the wheel to absorb sharp impacts.
Unsprung weight
The mass not supported by the springs — wheels, tyres, brakes and part of the suspension. Reducing it lets the suspension follow the road surface more quickly, improving grip and ride.
Spring preload
Compression applied to the spring at rest. On BC Racing kits ride height adjusts separately from preload, so lowering the car does not consume suspension travel.
Pillowball top mount
A spherical bearing top mount that removes rubber compliance for more precise damper movement and steering feel. Often camber adjustable.
Low and high speed compression
Refers to damper shaft speed, not vehicle speed. Low-speed compression governs body movements like roll and dive; high-speed compression governs sharp inputs like kerbs and potholes.

BC Racing coilover FAQs

How low will my BMW sit on BC Racing coilovers?

A standard BC Racing kit sits roughly 25mm below OEM ride height at its highest setting and around 60 to 75mm below OEM at its lowest. An Extra Low kit uses shorter springs, shorter dampers or both, starting at approximately 50mm below OEM and reaching around 100mm below.

Most BMW owners do not need Extra Low. A standard kit already has more adjustment than most people use, and going too low creates more problems than it solves — geometry, arch clearance and driveshaft angles all begin working against you.

How stiff are BC Racing coilovers compared to standard BMW suspension?

BC's recommended kits use springs around 15 to 20 percent stiffer than OEM with damper valving around 20 to 30 percent stiffer. That reads as noticeably better body control while remaining completely usable on the road. Because damping is adjustable across 30 levels, you can soften it off for the commute and firm it up when it matters.

Are BC Racing coilovers comfortable enough for daily driving?

Yes, on the road-focused kits. The V1 and BR Series are designed to be driven every day, and because ride height adjusts independently of spring preload you keep the suspension travel that makes a car ride well. Set the damping soft for daily use and you will find most BMWs ride better than they do on worn factory dampers.

Should I order custom spring rates?

Usually not on your first kit. The standard rates are developed for your specific chassis and suit the vast majority of road and fast-road BMWs. Custom rates make sense for track-only cars, cars running large low-treadwear tyres, or builds needing a tight fender-to-lip fit. Custom kits are built to order with matched valving and take around 2 to 3 weeks. As a guide, you can move roughly 2kg up or down from standard before the damper valving needs changing to suit.

Do I need an alignment after fitting coilovers?

Yes. Changing ride height changes your geometry, so a full alignment is essential. Let the suspension settle for about a week of normal driving first, then have it set up properly. Corner balancing is worth doing on a car that sees heavy track use but is not necessary on a daily driver.

What is on-centre and off-centre on a BMW E36, E46, Z3 or Z4?

Those chassis were built with two different top plate designs, and the coilover kits are not interchangeable between them. Check which your car has before ordering — camber and caster plates are available for both. Send us a photo of your top mounts if you are not certain.

What is included in a BC Racing coilover kit?

Every kit includes four coilovers. Top mounts vary by series and chassis — some BMW applications reuse the OEM mounts, others come with aluminium or camber-adjustable pillowball mounts. Drop links are included wherever the kit requires them; if they are not in the box, the OEM links are correct.

What warranty do BC Racing coilovers come with, and how long is delivery?

Every BC Racing kit carries a 1 year manufacturer warranty, and every component is available as a spare with low lead times, so a kit can be serviced or rebuilt rather than replaced. In-stock kits typically leave within 1 to 2 working days; custom-built kits take approximately 2 to 3 weeks.

So which BC Racing coilover should you buy?

If the car is driven on the road and enjoyed at weekends, buy the BR Series. It is the kit most of our customers choose and the one that makes the most sense for the money.

If you are doing several track days a year, look at the DS Series for its digressive valving or the RM Series if the reduced unsprung weight and inverted design appeal.

If the car is genuinely track-focused and you know what you want to adjust, the ER and HM Series give you separate compression and rebound. And if you are racing or drifting competitively, the ZR and ZX Series are the full three-way answer.
