H&R wheel spacer fitted to the front hub of a BMW G09 XM

BMW G09 XM Wheel Spacer Guide: Which Size Is Best? (15mm vs 20mm)

We tested 15mm and 20mm H&R wheel spacers on the BMW G09 XM. Here is the best setup for most owners, the aggressive option, why 20mm is the TÜV-approved limit and what you need to order.

Few cars divide opinion like the BMW G09 XM, but one thing most owners agree on is that the factory wheel fitment does not match the size of the car. The XM is wide, tall and visually heavy, yet its wheels sit noticeably inboard of the arches, particularly at the rear. From some angles the car looks narrower than it really is.

Wheel spacers are the quickest and most cost-effective way to fix that. To find the best setup, we fitted three different combinations of H&R TRAK+ wheel spacers to a G09 XM in our London workshop and compared each one with the standard car. This guide covers what we found, which sizes we recommend, why 20mm is the limit and what you need to order.

The Short Answer

  • Best for most owners: 15mm front / 20mm rear. A noticeable but safe change at the front, with the rear finally sitting flush.
  • Aggressive: 20mm front / 20mm rear. The front fills the arch much more, for owners who want maximum road presence.
  • Maximum size: 20mm per side. Anything larger is not TÜV approved or homologated for road use on the XM.
  • The rear needs 20mm: anything smaller still leaves the rear wheel tucked in rather than flush.

BMW G09 XM Wheel Spacer Sizes: Our Recommendations

The table below summarises the setups we tested and what each one is best suited to. Prices are for a full set of H&R spacers at R44 Performance in October 2026, shown as GBP / USD / EUR.

Setup Front Rear Result Price (without bolts) Price (with Bimecc bolts)
Recommended 15mm 20mm Safe, noticeable change at the front; rear sits flush. Best balance for most XM owners. £259.21 / $324.01 / €311.05 £299.21 / $374.01 / €359.05
Aggressive 20mm 20mm Front fills the arch much more. A big change, but still a safe, approved fitment. £267.12 / $333.90 / €320.54 £307.12 / $383.90 / €368.54
Tested, not recommended 15mm 15mm Good at the front, but the rear wheels still look tucked in. – –

What We Tested on the BMW XM

We started with the XM on its standard suspension and no spacers, then fitted three combinations in turn, photographing the car in the same spot each time so the differences were easy to compare.

15mm All Round

A square 15mm setup makes a clear difference, and at the front it is a safe and well-judged change. At the rear, however, the wheels still sit slightly too far inside the arches. This was the first sign that the rear of the XM needs more than the front.

20mm All Round

With 20mm spacers on all four corners, the rear looked spot on. The wheels fill the arches properly and the car finally looks as wide as it is. At the front, 20mm is a big change and quite an aggressive look. It is still a safe, approved fitment, but it is a more dramatic result than some owners will want.

15mm Front / 20mm Rear

Combining the two gave the best overall balance. The 15mm front keeps the front end sharp without going too far, while the 20mm rear finally gets the back wheels flush with the bodywork. For the majority of XM owners, this is the setup we recommend.

That said, fitment is personal. The XM we tested ended up on 20mm front and rear, as its owner wanted the more aggressive look for daily driving.

Stock vs 20mm: Before and After

These side-by-side images show how much a 20mm spacer changes the XM at each end of the car.

The rear comparison shows why we recommend 20mm there. On the standard car the rear wheel sits well inside the arch. With a 20mm spacer it moves out to sit flush with the bodywork, which is what gives the XM its extra road presence.

Why 20mm Is the Maximum for the BMW XM

Every H&R TRAK+ spacer is individually TÜV tested and supplied with an ABE parts certificate. For the G09 XM, H&R certifies five per-side thicknesses: 10, 12, 15, 18 and 20mm. These are the only sizes that pass H&R's clearance and arch-coverage testing for this car, so they are the only sizes we offer.

The limit is set by how far the wheel can move outward before the tyre risks contacting the arch or sitting proud of the bodywork, which is a legal requirement. Anything above 20mm on the XM is not TÜV approved or homologated for road use. If you see larger spacers advertised for the XM, they will not carry this approval.

Fitting approved spacers does not remove your own responsibility for your car. Always make sure your complete wheel, tyre and suspension setup is legal for your country and that your insurer is aware of any modifications.

Why the Rear Needs 20mm

The XM's rear wheels sit further inboard than the fronts, so a square setup does not give an even result. In our testing, anything below 20mm at the rear still left the wheel looking tucked in rather than flush with the arch. That is why both of our recommended setups use 20mm at the back and only change the front.

About the H&R TRAK+ Wheel Spacers

We normally fit Bimecc spacers, but for this test we used H&R, and we were impressed. The H&R BMW G09 XM wheel spacers are solid, well-made pieces, comparable in quality to the Bimecc spacers we fit regularly.

  • Precision CNC-machined from high-strength aluminium.
  • Hub-centric: made to the XM's 5x120 bolt pattern and 66.5mm centre bore, so the wheel stays centred on the hub for vibration-free fitment.
  • TÜV tested and ABE certified in every size offered for the XM (10, 12, 15, 18 and 20mm).
  • Independent front and rear sizes: choose a square or staggered setup, including our recommended 15mm front / 20mm rear.
  • Silver or black finish: both are the same price.
  • Optional Bimecc extended wheel bolts: add them for £40 / $50 / €48 on top of the spacer price.

The H&R XM spacers fit all G09 XM models from December 2022 onwards, including the XM and XM Label, as all share the same 5x120, 66.5mm-bore hub.

Do I Need Extended Wheel Bolts?

Yes. A spacer pushes the wheel further from the hub, so the factory bolts no longer reach far enough into the hub to hold the wheel safely. You need longer bolts sized to your spacer thickness.

The easiest option is to choose With Bimecc extended bolts when you order. You will then be sent the correct length of Bimecc bolts for the front and rear sizes you have chosen. If your XM has locking wheel bolts, remember that these also need to be longer, so speak to our team if you are unsure what you need.

Wheel Spacers and Lowering Springs

Spacers and lowering springs work best together. Spacers fix how far the wheel sits in or out, while springs reduce the gap between the tyre and the top of the arch. On the XM, spacers alone already give the car far more road presence, and lowering it will close up the arch gap that remains.

If you plan to lower your XM later, bear in mind that a lower ride height brings the tyre closer to the arch. We plan to fit springs to an XM and will report back on how they work with 20mm spacers, but until then the 15mm front / 20mm rear setup is the safer choice if you expect to lower the car. Fitting Tips From the R44 Workshop

  • Clean the hub faces and the back of the wheel before fitting. Any rust or debris between the hub, spacer and wheel can cause vibration.
  • Always use the correct extended bolts for the spacer thickness on each axle. Front and rear lengths will differ on a staggered setup.
  • Torque the bolts to BMW's specification in a star pattern, with the car on the ground.
  • Re-check the torque after the first 50 miles or so.
  • Check full-lock and full-bump clearance, especially if your XM runs non-standard wheels, tyres or suspension.

BMW G09 XM Wheel Spacer FAQs

What size wheel spacers should I fit to a BMW XM?

For most owners we recommend 15mm at the front and 20mm at the rear. For a more aggressive look, 20mm front and rear also works well and is still an approved fitment.

What is the largest wheel spacer I can fit to a BMW G09 XM?

20mm per side. H&R certifies 10, 12, 15, 18 and 20mm for the XM. Anything above 20mm is not TÜV approved or homologated for road use.

Why do I need 20mm spacers on the rear of the XM?

The XM's rear wheels sit further inboard than the fronts. In our testing, anything smaller than 20mm at the rear still left the wheels looking tucked in rather than flush with the arches.

Are 15mm spacers all round enough for the BMW XM?

15mm all round improves the front noticeably, but the rear wheels still sit slightly too far inside the arches. We recommend pairing 15mm front with 20mm rear instead.

Do I need longer wheel bolts with spacers on the XM?

Yes. Spacers move the wheel away from the hub, so the factory bolts are too short. Choose the option with Bimecc extended bolts when you order and you will receive the correct lengths for your chosen sizes.

Do the H&R spacers fit the BMW XM Label?

Yes. The H&R spacers fit all G09 XM models from December 2022 onwards, as they share the same 5x120 bolt pattern and 66.5mm centre bore.

Are H&R wheel spacers hub-centric?

Yes. H&R TRAK+ spacers are hub-centric and CNC-machined from high-strength aluminium, so the wheel stays centred on the hub for vibration-free fitment.

How much do BMW XM wheel spacers cost?

At R44 Performance in October 2026, H&R spacers for the XM start from £219.70 / $274.63 / €263.64. Our recommended 15mm front / 20mm rear setup is £259.21 / $324.01 / €311.05 without bolts or £299.21 / $374.01 / €359.05 with Bimecc extended bolts.

Can I fit wheel spacers and lowering springs to the XM?

Yes, and they work well together. Lowering brings the tyre closer to the arch, so if you plan to lower your XM, the 15mm front / 20mm rear setup is the safer starting point.
