At the core of this intercooler system lies the Formula-1 grade intercooler cores developed by PWR, a world-renowned leader in high-performance cooling technology. CSF’s strategic partnership with PWR enables the incorporation of these advanced cores, which are unmatched in the performance aftermarket sector. These cores have been successfully implemented in other CSF air-to-air systems for the Porsche 992 Turbo/S and the 991 GT2RS, yielding remarkable results in heat dissipation and intake air temperature reduction.

The PWR cores excel in eliminating heat soak and significantly lowering Intake Air Temperatures (IATs) more efficiently than conventional Bar & Plate or Tube & Fin intercooler designs. Traditional cores often rely on increased size and weight to achieve cooling capacity, but the PWR cores achieve superior performance within a more compact and lightweight package. This advantage allows CSF to design the intercooler system to fit precisely in the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) location, utilizing all OEM hardware, ducts, and shrouds for a clean and professional installation.

The 3.0L Twin Turbo engine powering the Porsche 992 series is susceptible to heat soak and rising IATs during spirited driving or demanding conditions, which can lead to the engine control unit (ECU) reducing timing and power output to protect the engine. The CSF intercooler system addresses this critical issue by maintaining optimal air charge temperatures, enabling the vehicle to perform consistently at peak levels for extended periods. This translates to improved throttle response, sustained power delivery, and enhanced driving confidence.

In addition to the advanced intercooler cores, the CSF system features 100% TIG-welded billet aluminum end tanks, a significant upgrade over the OEM’s crimped plastic composite end tanks. The OEM plastic end tanks are prone to cracking under high boost pressures, which can compromise performance and reliability. The CNC machined billet end tanks on the CSF intercooler system offer superior strength and durability, ensuring resilience under increased boost pressures from performance tuning or upgraded turbochargers.

Product Details

Before the introduction of the 991.2 Porsche 911, non-turbo models had limited options for substantial performance enhancements. The adoption of the 3.0L Turbo engine across all Carrera trim levels (excluding Turbo, GT2, and GT3) opened new avenues for performance tuning and upgrades.

CSF’s research and development partner, M-Engineering, a respected Porsche tuning specialist, has developed software tunes that increase power output by up to 146 wheel horsepower (whp) with just a Stage 1 tune on the Carrera S. However, as with the 911 Turbo, the Carrera models are susceptible to power loss due to intercooler heat soak, which is exacerbated by the OEM intercooler’s placement directly above the engine, exposing it to intense radiant heat.

The CSF 992.1 Carrera intercooler system is engineered specifically to overcome these limitations by providing enhanced cooling capacity and durability. It is designed to handle higher boost levels reliably while fitting seamlessly into the stock intercooler location.

Design & Engineering

The CSF 992 Carrera intercooler system is designed as a genuine Plug-and-Play "Drop-in Fit" solution. Installation is facilitated by the use of all factory mounting points, eliminating the need for any cutting, modifications, or custom fabrication. This ensures that the upgrade maintains OEM standards for fit and finish.

PWR Intercooler Core Technology

The centerpiece of this intercooler system is the Formula-1 grade intercooler core manufactured by PWR. This core technology is a direct result of CSF’s strategic partnership with PWR, allowing the integration of a high-performance core that is unparalleled in the aftermarket industry.

The intercooler cores used in this system are identical to those applied in CSF’s previously developed systems for the Porsche 992 Turbo/S and 991 GT2RS, both of which have demonstrated exceptional performance improvements. The PWR cores effectively eliminate heat soak and reduce Intake Air Temperatures (IATs) more efficiently than traditional Bar & Plate or Tube & Fin intercoolers, which generally require larger and heavier cores to achieve similar cooling performance.

Like many turbocharged vehicles, the 3.0L Twin Turbo engine in the Porsche 992 is subject to significant heat soak and increasing Intake Air Temperatures (IATs) even during moderately spirited driving. This thermal load causes the ECU to retard ignition timing to protect the engine, resulting in reduced power output.
