If you’ve got your hands on a facelifted (LCI) 2025+ BMW G80/G81 M3 or G82/G83 M4 and you’re dreaming of those iconic CSL-yellow daytime running lights (DRLs), you’ve probably noticed that the process isn’t quite as simple as it used to be. With BMW’s latest LCI update, there have been some key changes to the headlights—and not necessarily ones that make retrofitting easier.
So, What’s Changed With the LCI Headlights?
In the pre-LCI G8X models, retrofitting yellow DRLs was pretty straightforward. The DRL modules were external and easy to access—just a quick swap and you were ready to go.

But starting with the 2025 LCI update, BMW has changed things up. The new headlight design is now LED-only—laserlights, which were previously available as an optional extra, are no longer offered. More importantly, the DRL modules are no longer separate components. They’re now integrated directly inside the sealed headlight unit, meaning you can’t just swap them out for yellow ones.
There are likely a couple of reasons for this change:
- Streamlined design – The updated LED-only headlights are more compact and fully integrated for better durability and efficiency.
- Exclusivity – BMW may be intentionally making it harder to retrofit yellow DRLs to keep the signature CSL look exclusive to the official CS and CSL models.
The Only Real Solution: OEM CS Headlights

If you’re set on having CSL-style yellow DRLs on your 2025+ LCI G80/G81 M3 or G82/G83 M4, your only real option is to install the OEM CS headlights. These come directly from BMW with the yellow DRL modules built in—just like what’s found on the limited-run CS models.
However, unlike pre-LCI cars where you could change just the DRL module at a much lower cost, replacing the entire headlight units is significantly more expensive. That said, if you're serious about making the upgrade more affordable, we recommend selling your OEM LCI headlights to recoup some of the cost. These lights still hold strong value on the used market and can offset a good chunk of the retrofit expense.
The other benefit of using the CS headlights is the black backing which makes your car look even more aggressive than the OEM silver-backed headlights.

Installation Tips
Retrofitting CS headlights isn’t a plug-and-play task, but it’s definitely doable with the right tools and experience. Here’s a quick summary of what’s involved:
- Remove the front bumper to access the headlight mounting points
- Disconnect and remove the factory LCI headlights (carefully, as these are integrated LED units)
- Install the new OEM CS headlights, ensuring proper alignment and secure connection
- Code the new headlights using BMW-specific diagnostic tools to ensure full compatibility and avoid warning lights
This kind of job is best handled by a BMW specialist or trusted retrofit shop with experience in G8X platform upgrades.

Final Thoughts
With the 2025+ LCI G8X models, BMW has made the road to yellow DRLs a bit more complicated—but not impossible. While swapping out a DRL module is off the table, retrofitting the OEM CS headlights gives you the exact factory look, backed by OEM quality and perfect fitment. It’s a higher upfront cost, yes—but sell your original headlights, and it becomes a much more accessible upgrade.
If you’re serious about standing out with a proper CSL look, the OEM CS headlight retrofit is the way to go.
